about

This originally untitled track was first released in 1982 on a C35 cassette, split with Albert Marcoeur, on the French music magazine label Tago Mago. The cassette was then reissued in 2016 by care in the community recordings to be sold on tour with This Is Not This Heat: the internationally acclaimed This Heat iteration active between 2016 and 2019.

Although This Heat and Mario Diekuuroh played together five or six times, including a gig at The Factory, Manchester, the track derives from a single improvisation session at the band’s legendary Cold Storage studio in 1977. Edited in a "cassette pause-edit" style by Charles Bullen, it is a selection of highlights of the day and the record of a rare occasion when the intensely creative relationship between the three individuals that formed This Heat welcomed a fourth artist.

Born in Upper West Ghana, Mario Diekuuroh began his musical education at eight years of age in a House of Gyli. As a young adult he moved to Accra and formed a social dancing group with Dagaaba people and then under the auspices of the Arts Council of Ghana he formed Ananse Kromian Sounds (Village of Spider Sounds), playing the Gyli. Touring the world with the Ghana National Dance Company in the mid-70s Diekuuroh settled in Deptford, London, where he would meet This Heat.

In the session Mario Diekuuroh played the Gyli (a Ghanaian Marimba like instrument with gourd resonators), Carved Wooden Flute and Percussion; Charles Bullen played Guitar, Clarinet, Viola and Toy Plastic Flute; Charles Hayward played Keyboards, Melodica, Harmonica and 2 Swanee Whistles; Gareth Williams played Bass and Keyboards.

about

This Heat London, UK

Although widely considered to be Post-Punk’s finest, This Heat actually began performing their music in the early days of London’s punk era.

They developed new strange and volatile strains of avant-garde music that time has proved to be hugely influential, a blueprint for much that would follow.

Ahead of their time, their music is as startlingly original and relevant as the day it was created.
